There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Evan Anderson a full 39 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They jumped the gun on Jackson Powers-Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 56 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at the 75th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Audric Estime in pick No. 87 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach on Darius Robinson in slot 110; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
James Williams in No. 136 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in the 146th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on De'Corian Clark in pick No. 186, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Isaiah Neyor at the 205th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Sam Hartman in Round 6, Pick 37 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Nathaniel Watson in pick 232; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Evan Anderson at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A conviction pick on Donell Harris Jr. at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
