The R.J. Oben pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 169 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Ransom. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Somehow Tetairoa McMillan was still sitting there in No. 44, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in pick 51, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Alfred Collins at the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Dylan Fairchild all the way to the 85th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Jaxson Dart higher than slot 148, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Jalen Travis in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Jack Bech still on the board at Round 5, Pick 33. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into R.J. Oben at No. 173, and the board did not agree. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Taking Lathan Ransom in the 186th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Hunter Wohler at the 189th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Jason Henderson at pick 195 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Deion Burks at slot 209, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyler Cooper in pick No. 248 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
