When the story of this class is written, it opens with Braelon Allen at No. 87, a reach of 72 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Bertrand falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 10 they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Keon Coleman at Round 1, Pick 24 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Spencer Rattler at pick 70, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Braelon Allen at No. 87, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Leonard Taylor III in slot 125. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Jaylin Simpson in the 173rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tarheeb Still in Round 6, Pick 38 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
JD Bertrand in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
