The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Dunker. The cost of the Cuevas reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Chris Johnson in Round 2, Pick 6, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Anthony Hill Jr. all the way to pick 65, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Lee Hunter in slot 71 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
Gennings Dunker at No. 92 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Zakee Wheatley at the 104th pick is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Logan Jones is a better player than slot 109 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach on Zxavian Harris in the 147th pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Nate Boerkircher graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 6, Pick 2 with a little surplus value in Domani Jackson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a wide receiver like Josh Cameron reach No. 209 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board had cheaper options than Kaelon Black at pick No. 218, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Miles Kitselman, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Josh Cuevas at the 241st overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
