Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the 233rd overall pick on Matt Lee, a name most had 41 spots down the list. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Trice steal is the beam this whole class leans on. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on Adonai Mitchell in pick 35, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Keon Coleman come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Benson in the 64th overall pick, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick No. 87, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Bralen Trice at Round 3, Pick 27 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Cedric Gray in No. 109 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Fabien Lovett, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in pick No. 216, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Matt Lee at No. 233, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 244 with a little surplus value in Daijahn Anthony. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
