The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The DeJean pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Cole pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Cooper DeJean at pick No. 34 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Malachi Corley in the 68th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Matt Goncalves at the 103rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dylan Laube in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Steele Chambers at No. 224 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Maurice Smith in pick 232 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Myles Cole in slot 236 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
