After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Michael Penix Jr. is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is James. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Worthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Guyton in slot 34. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Xavier Worthy at pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kris Jenkins at Round 3, Pick 4 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a cornerback like DJ James reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Davis at No. 117 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Marist Liufau higher than pick No. 180, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A quiet steal in the 231st pick: Garret Greenfield for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
