Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Kyle Williams, the No. 197 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 240. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Josh Downs deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
Matthew Golden in pick 14 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kenneth Grant slipping to pick No. 38 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Aireontae Ersery at the 45th pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kaleb Johnson in the 69th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Harold Fannin Jr. in No. 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Ozzy Trapilo come to them and pounced at slot 105. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Darius Alexander in Round 5, Pick 6. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Upton Stout here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Woody Marks still on the board at pick No. 222. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kyle Williams at slot 240 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
