There is reaching, and then there is Que Robinson at slot 152. The Cowboys jumped the board by 95 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Getting Stout where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Cordell Volson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.22
· Pick 22
· Will Johnson
· CB
· rank 8
In No. 22 they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.14
· Pick 46
· Josh Conerly Jr.
· OT
· rank 36
A slide stopped in the 46th pick, with Josh Conerly Jr. worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.17
· Pick 49
· Alfred Collins
· DT
· rank 56
By-the-book stuff, Alfred Collins at pick 49 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.23
· Pick 55
· Carson Schwesinger
· LB
· rank 87
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Carson Schwesinger well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Quinn Ewers
· QB
· rank 97
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Quinn Ewers. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.16
· Pick 117
· Jayden Higgins
· WR
· rank 73
They barely believed it either: Jayden Higgins still on the board at Round 4, Pick 16. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.17
· Pick 118
· Cam Skattebo
· RB
· rank 105
Cam Skattebo is a better player than No. 118 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.11
· Pick 150
· Cody Simon
· LB
· rank 135
Cody Simon in the 150th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.13
· Pick 152
· Que Robinson
· LB-EDGE
· rank 247
Que Robinson at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.31
· Pick 170
· Luke Lachey
· TE
· rank 194
Luke Lachey in the 170th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
R5.33
· Pick 172
· Jack Nelson
· OT
· rank 130
Steal is underselling it; Jack Nelson at slot 172 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.35
· Pick 174
· CJ West
· DT
· rank 212
This one needs a full-page explanation: CJ West in pick 174, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.12
· Pick 190
· Nick Nash
· WR
· rank 148
Taking Nick Nash in pick No. 190 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.33
· Pick 211
· Raheim Sanders
· RB
· rank 153
Somehow Raheim Sanders was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 33, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· Upton Stout
· S
· rank 184
A safety of that caliber at pick 249 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.35
· Pick 253
· Thor Griffith
· DL
· rank 294
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
