Somebody in the 249th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Donovan Edwards, the No. 186 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will need Kiser to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. The Josh Downs deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Kenneth Grant

In No. 24 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Jonah Savaiinaea
· OT
· rank 47
No edge and no loss on Jonah Savaiinaea in pick 44; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Jack Bech
· WR
· rank 65
They read the board right and Jack Bech was the payoff at pick No. 76. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.33
· Pick 97
· Cam Skattebo
· RB
· rank 99
Cam Skattebo at the 97th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.11
· Pick 150
· Jackson Slater
· OG
· rank 143
Jackson Slater at slot 150 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.31
· Pick 170
· Jack Kiser
· LB
· rank 198
Jack Kiser in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.33
· Pick 172
· Mitchell Evans
· TE
· rank 142
Taking Mitchell Evans in Round 5, Pick 33 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
R5.35
· Pick 174
· Logan Brown
· OT
· rank 144
Steal is underselling it; Logan Brown at the 174th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.12
· Pick 190
· CJ West
· DT
· rank 213
CJ West at pick 190 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.33
· Pick 211
· Jay Higgins
· LB
· rank 182
Jay Higgins in slot 211 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· Donovan Edwards
· RB
· rank 186
They will replay Donovan Edwards at the 249th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
