You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Broncos did exactly that with Kaytron Allen in No. 104. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
R2.11
· Pick 43
· Jacob Rodriguez
· LB
· rank 72
Value said wait; Jacob Rodriguez in pick 43 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.11
· Pick 75
· A.J. Haulcy
· S
· rank 50
You do not let a safety like A.J. Haulcy reach slot 75 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.23
· Pick 87
· Sam Roush
· TE
· rank 90
No drama and no debate, Sam Roush went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Kaytron Allen
· RB
· rank 147
Kaytron Allen at the 104th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.8
· Pick 108
· Jude Bowry
· OT
· rank 129
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jude Bowry in the 108th pick, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.11
· Pick 111
· Bryce Lance
· WR
· rank 92
The board fumbled Bryce Lance all the way to pick No. 111, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.30
· Pick 130
· DeMonte Capehart
· DT
· rank 137
DeMonte Capehart at slot 130 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.11
· Pick 151
· Taylen Green
· QB
· rank 188
Taylen Green at pick 151 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
R5.30
· Pick 170
· Keagen Trost
· OT
· rank 183
A reach on Keagen Trost in No. 170; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.2
· Pick 183
· Dallen Bentley
· TE
· rank 200
A reach for Dallen Bentley in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.1
· Pick 217
· Jack Kelly
· LB
· rank 256
They reached into another round for Jack Kelly, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.11
· Pick 227
· Nick Barrett
· DL
· rank 254
A wild overpay on Nick Barrett in the 227th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.22
· Pick 238
· Adam Randall
· RB
· rank 274
Adam Randall at pick No. 238 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.23
· Pick 239
· Eli Heidenreich
· WR
· rank 240
They took Eli Heidenreich at par in Round 7, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
