Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kamal Hadden got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at slot 216. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Powers-Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Somehow T'Vondre Sweat was still sitting there in slot 64, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Bucky Irving at par in the 89th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Mahogany. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Luke McCaffrey at No. 174 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Julian Pearl come to them and pounced at pick 214. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Kamal Hadden all the way to Round 6, Pick 41, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Steele Chambers at the 220th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, JD Bertrand at pick No. 233. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Sheridan Jones at No. 244 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
