Somebody in No. 174 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Kevin Winston Jr., the No. 98 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped offensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The back end got a real overhaul.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the offensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Will Johnson in the 12th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Omarion Hampton, who had no business lasting to pick No. 44. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Darien Porter at pick 76 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Jaylin Noel was still sitting there in No. 149, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Darius Alexander reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Kevin Winston Jr. in the 174th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Phil Mafah in Round 6, Pick 28, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Jack Kiser all the way to slot 211, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 239, where Isaac TeSlaa graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Shemar James come to them and pounced at slot 247. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
