Bond should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a C.

You could see the war room lean forward. Isaiah Bond at the Round 5 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The final tally is a middling C.

The cost of the Simpkins III reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.

On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 10
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.20 · Pick 20 · Armand Membou · OT · rank 18
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.25 · Pick 25 · James Pearce Jr. · DE-EDGE · rank 12
In the 25th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jaxson Dart · QB · rank 37
They did well to land Jaxson Dart in No. 44, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 56
Circle this one: Alfred Collins at slot 76 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Cameron Williams · OT · rank 67
They let Cameron Williams come to them and pounced at the 79th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · Dylan Sampson · RB · rank 61
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Sampson at pick No. 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 83
Nothing to complain about; Andrew Mukuba went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.20 · Pick 122 · Carson Schwesinger · LB · rank 69
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 122 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.11 · Pick 149 · Isaiah Bond · WR · rank 76
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Bond still on the board at pick No. 149. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 164
A reasonable price with a little left over, Seth McLaughlin in slot 171. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.28 · Pick 204 · Cam Jackson · DT · rank 231
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cam Jackson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.35 · Pick 211 · Torricelli Simpkins III · OG · rank 259
They reached a country mile for Torricelli Simpkins III at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
