You could see the war room lean forward. Isaiah Bond at the Round 5 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The final tally is a middling C.
The cost of the Simpkins III reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 25th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
They did well to land Jaxson Dart in No. 44, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Alfred Collins at slot 76 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They let Cameron Williams come to them and pounced at the 79th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Sampson at pick No. 85 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Andrew Mukuba went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 122 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Bond still on the board at pick No. 149. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Seth McLaughlin in slot 171. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
