After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
If Williams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The Colson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end and interior defensive lineman. That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Jayden Daniels in Round 1, Pick 8, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at the 36th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick 40. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Graham Barton at the 50th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in No. 54, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A surprising call. With tight end and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent slot 69 on Junior Colson, a linebacker they were not short of.
Khyree Jackson at pick No. 97 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
This one needs a full-page explanation: James Williams in the 103rd pick, miles early. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Braelon Allen in Round 5, Pick 2 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They read the board right and Joe Milton III was the payoff at pick 181. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Neyor at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for David Ugwoegbu in No. 223, more than the board wanted. The roster logic is harder to follow.
