The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Beau Brade, the No. 134 name on the board, in slot 167. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
The cost of the Cole reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in slot 40. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Chris Braswell at the 56th pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Kris Jenkins, who had no business lasting to pick No. 58. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kiran Amegadjie at the 67th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 75 with a little surplus value in Jaylen Wright. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in Round 3, Pick 30; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Austin Booker here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Brenden Rice at pick 100 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Theo Johnson in pick No. 113, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in the 114th overall pick, where Cam Hart graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Foster at slot 130 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Beau Brade in Round 5, Pick 31 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Myles Cole at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
