After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Tampa to cover a lot of smaller sins. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the 36th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy little value on Kingsley Suamataia in pick 67, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Patrick Paul come to them and pounced at No. 78. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled T.J. Tampa all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Ben Sinnott was the payoff at the 139th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 152 with a little surplus value in Luke McCaffrey. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Trevin Wallace in slot 222; a little patience would have been rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
