Washington Commanders

The Commanders found their guy under center in Daniels: B+.

by bshea · 2024 NFL Draft · 12 picks · 3 steals · 4 reaches

Start where it matters. The Commanders took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

Landing Carter that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Reaching for Cole left real value on the table behind him.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 6
No drama and no debate, Jayden Daniels went about where he belonged in the Round 1 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in slot 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.22 · Pick 54 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 22, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 52
Junior Colson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 67 is lovely value for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
Khyree Jackson at the 88th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 83
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Calen Bullock at the 91st overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
Johnny Wilson in No. 114 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 129
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at pick 117, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 101
They robbed the room for DeWayne Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
A reasonable price with a little left over, Luke McCaffrey in the 152nd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 198
A reach for Myles Cole in slot 181; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
Trevin Wallace at No. 222 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
