They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop.

They will need McLachlan to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

Bottom line, with Drake Maye leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 7
In the 9th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
Amarius Mims in slot 34 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 47
No drama and no debate, Xavier Worthy went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 63
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in No. 66. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 70
Kingsley Suamataia at Round 3, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 68
Austin Booker at pick No. 71 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. The roster fit checks out.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
They jumped the gun on Khyree Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 105
A reach on Theo Johnson in the 96th pick; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 88
Calen Bullock slid further than he should have, and the 100th pick is lovely value for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 113
They went early on Braelon Allen in pick 105, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 110
DeWayne Carter at No. 114 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 139
They paid sticker price for Elijah Jones in Round 4, Pick 34, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 151
The board had cheaper options than Trevin Wallace at pick No. 137, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 150
A premium they did not need to pay, Luke McCaffrey a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 160
Cornelius Johnson at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.19 · Pick 155 · Tanner McLachlan · TE · rank 206
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at the 155th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 216
Joe Milton III at Round 6, Pick 5 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Eric Watts · DL-EDGE · rank 239
A wild overpay on Eric Watts in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Carson Steele · RB · rank 248
Carson Steele at pick No. 222 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Tyler Owens · S · rank 247
Fair-plus on Tyler Owens, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
