Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the 174th pick on Curtis Jacobs, a name most had 27 spots down the list. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Lloyd to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Malachi Corley at Round 3, Pick 24 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
MarShawn Lloyd slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Curtis Jacobs in pick 174, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Omar Speights at No. 212 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cody Schrader at slot 245 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
