Start where it matters. The Commanders took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Getting Colson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The cost of the Allen reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Chop Robinson in the 36th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Patrick Paul in No. 54, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in pick No. 77, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Junior Colson at the 101st overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in slot 102, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
James Williams at Round 5, Pick 2 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Braelon Allen in pick 147 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
