Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Dallin Holker, the No. 147 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 5, Pick 34. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Taylor III pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 14 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 12, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Graham Barton went about where he belonged in the 45th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 50 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Chris Braswell in slot 58 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at No. 77 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Khyree Jackson at the 96th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Leonard Taylor III in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nothing to complain about; James Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Braelon Allen at Round 5, Pick 16 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Joe Milton III at pick 160 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 170 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in No. 220, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
