Thirty-one other rooms let Cedric Gray slide, and the Commanders were the ones holding the card at pick No. 181. Highway robbery.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Jordan Morgan higher than No. 36, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
J.J. McCarthy at the 40th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Johnny Wilson at pick 67 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Blake Fisher, who had no business lasting to the 108th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
James Williams in pick No. 138 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Somehow Cedric Gray was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 6, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jordan Magee at Round 6, Pick 45 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
