You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Commanders spent the 101st pick on Javon Solomon while tight end, edge rusher and other spots sat unaddressed.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. If Powers-Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A conviction pick on Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 36th pick that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Jonathon Brooks went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Mason McCormick in slot 97; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in No. 101 leaves tight end, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Leonard Taylor III in the 103rd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Cam Hart at Round 5, Pick 2 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 181 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Fair-plus on Jordan Magee, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
