The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 209th overall pick on Steven Parker a full 106 spots early.
That Reed pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Ashton Jeanty was the payoff at the 12th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jalon Walker in slot 44 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Deone Walker in the 76th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Rod Moore at pick No. 148 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Value said wait; Brandon Adams in pick 168 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Miles Frazier at the 174th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Will Sheppard, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Steven Parker in pick No. 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jaylen Reed in No. 243 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jimmy Horn Jr.. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
