The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Cody Simon, the No. 122 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Reaching for Roberts left real value on the table behind him.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a two-high chess piece, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Tyler Warren at pick 61 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 79 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Jaeden Roberts in No. 146, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a specialist like Dominic Zvada reach Round 6, Pick 28 and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Miles Frazier in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in slot 247, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
