The tape said wait; the Commanders did not. Xavier Thomas went at Round 7, Pick 3, a good 32 picks before the board was ready.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. On value alone, Milton III makes the weekend a net positive.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The veteran additions, Asante Samuel Jr. chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 10
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a building block for the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 40 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 56
No edge and no loss on Chris Braswell in No. 50; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.22 · Pick 54 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 50
Fair-plus on Graham Barton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 75
The board had cheaper options than Junior Colson at pick 67, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 112
A reach for Leonard Taylor III in pick No. 102; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · James Williams · S · rank 134
A reasonable price with a little left over, James Williams in Round 5, Pick 5. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 164
They read the board right and Joe Milton III was the payoff at the 181st pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 255
Xavier Thomas in the 223rd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
