Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Blake Corum got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at No. 117.
The cost of the Milton III reach is exactly the players who went right after him. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman went begging.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. at pick 6 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Edgerrin Cooper at the 55th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jonathon Brooks at pick No. 66 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at No. 67, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at slot 71 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Khyree Jackson at the 78th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson slid further than he should have, and slot 99 is lovely value for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Cade Stover at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in the 108th overall pick leaves interior defensive lineman for later.
Taking Blake Corum in pick 117 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Trevor Keegan in the 160th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A premium they did not need to pay, Eric Watts a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A conviction pick on Trevin Wallace at No. 222 that the board grades a round light. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Owens at pick No. 241 is the proof. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
