If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Commanders, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.

Williams has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
In pick 23 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 40 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 53
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in the 46th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 57
They paid up for Edgerrin Cooper at slot 48 when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 56
A tidy little value on Chris Braswell in the 59th pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 77
A reach on Cooper Beebe in No. 67; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 73
Good price on Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 15, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
Khyree Jackson at Round 4, Pick 1 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · James Williams · S · rank 134
James Williams in slot 113 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 143
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in pick 138, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 179
By-the-book stuff, Curtis Jacobs at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 211
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Sam Hartman at the 220th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
R7.1 · Pick 221 · Myles Jones · CB · rank 214
Myles Jones at pick No. 221 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
