Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Cornelius Johnson, the No. 188 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 236th overall pick. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
In pick 23 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
They did well to land J.J. McCarthy in Round 2, Pick 4, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 51
T.J. Tampa in No. 47 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A premium they did not need to pay, Kingsley Suamataia a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 60
Malachi Corley at pick No. 67 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
Khyree Jackson at the 87th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 106
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 107
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in the 107th overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 123
A reach on Theo Johnson in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 126
Johnny Wilson in the 116th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Sataoa Laumea · OT · rank 114
They robbed the room for Sataoa Laumea here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 197
Myles Cole at No. 188 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 205
Jaylan Ford slipping to slot 222 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.16 · Pick 236 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 188
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at pick No. 236. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.27 · Pick 247 · Edefuan Ulofoshio · LB · rank 236
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Edefuan Ulofoshio at Round 7, Pick 27. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
