Somebody in slot 216 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Cornelius Johnson, the No. 187 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 24; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at the 87th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Tykee Smith, who had no business lasting to pick 174. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 216 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Nathan Thomas in the 233rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jalen Coker at pick No. 244 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
