The Cowboys bet big and early on Trajan Jeffcoat, 75 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in the 87th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in the 102nd pick, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 169; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A clean, defensible pick in the 174th pick with a little surplus value in Dillon Johnson. It fills a real need, too.
They took Garret Greenfield at par in Round 6, Pick 41, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Taulia Tagovailoa in slot 219, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Trajan Jeffcoat at pick No. 233 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Bub Means at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
