After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Every board in the league had Gore Jr. lower, and that gap is the story. On value alone, Jones makes the weekend a net positive.
The Stover pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, cornerback and other spots still on the board. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at slot 36 is the proof. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 15 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 67th pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with tight end, cornerback and other spots open.
Bucky Irving at the 103rd overall pick is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Darius Robinson at pick No. 108 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Frank Gore Jr. this early at pick 138. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
James Williams in No. 140 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in the 181st pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Christian Jones at pick No. 220 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
