The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Fabien Lovett, the No. 183 name on the board, sitting there at the 231st pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Fisher has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a problem off the edge, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Bo Nix at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in slot 50: Ja'Tavion Sanders for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Blake Fisher in the 103rd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Josh Newton at Round 5, Pick 1. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 180; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Isaiah Davis in pick 193 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Fabien Lovett at No. 231 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
