When a board-topper like Michael Taaffe slides to the 100th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the 49ers did not. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. The veteran additions, Quenton Nelson chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Brandon Cisse and all.
Pick-by-Pick
Brandon Cisse is a better player than slot 48 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Circle this one: Anthony Hill Jr. at the 57th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Caleb Banks at the 59th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Germie Bernard at pick 79 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Michael Taaffe in No. 100, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They did well to land Aamil Wagner in pick No. 180, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
