There is reaching, and then there is Frank Gore Jr. at the 174th pick. The Cowboys jumped the board by 53 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at pick No. 56, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Christian Mahogany at the 87th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Khyree Jackson, who had no business lasting to No. 104. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Gore Jr. in the 174th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 41 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cornelius Johnson in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Marcellas Dial in Round 7, Pick 13, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, KT Leveston went about where he belonged in slot 244. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
