The rest of the league had time to spare on Donovan Smith; the Raiders did not wait, grabbing him 99 spots ahead at pick No. 106.
They banked enough surplus on Mondon Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Abdul Carter at the 6th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in the 37th overall pick, with T.J. Sanders worth more than the price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had cheaper options than Darien Porter at pick 68, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Dylan Sampson in Round 3, Pick 9 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Donovan Smith at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 142 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
