Somebody in pick No. 150 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Devin Neal, the No. 84 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. The bottom line is a respectable B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Need was not the driver here.
Taking Kenneth Grant in the 44th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Trey Amos here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Devin Neal at No. 150 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Jay Higgins at slot 170 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jack Nelson at the 172nd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Mello Dotson in Round 5, Pick 35 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pat Bryant at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Phil Mafah in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Karene Reid was still sitting there in slot 249, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
