The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Davison Igbinosun, 108 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The Arroyo pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The Campbell pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Mike Green at the 16th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malaki Starks in the 39th overall pick, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Jalon Walker at pick 44 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jihaad Campbell adds a linebacker and leaves interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in No. 69, and they pounced on premier tight end value. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Emery Jones Jr. at slot 79, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Davison Igbinosun this early at Round 4, Pick 2. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Nick Nash at pick 138, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Seth McLaughlin in the 219th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tight end of that caliber at the 220th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Jalen Rivers at slot 238, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
