The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Dani Dennis-Sutton, taking him 36 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It washes out to a C-, no better and no worse.
The Everette steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. It is not that Davis is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
So much rides on Blake Miller that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Blake Miller in Round 2, Pick 1 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in the 40th overall pick with a little surplus value in Dillon Thieneman. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Dani Dennis-Sutton at the 47th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Sam Roush in No. 97 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Daylen Everette was still sitting there in pick 108, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Keylan Rutledge in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steal is underselling it; Ted Hurst at pick 110 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Tacario Davis in Round 4, Pick 11 leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
