The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Dylan Fairchild fell into slot 222.
If Delp pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. It is not that Barron is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

In No. 3 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Wyatt Milum at Round 2, Pick 8 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach the 71st pick and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Ashton Jeanty here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Jahdae Barron in the Round 4 slot leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Restrepo in pick No. 142, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Logan Brown at slot 219 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Dylan Fairchild was still sitting there in pick 222, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Oscar Delp at the 236th pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
