If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cardinals would have aced it. Spencer Rattler at No. 66 is 46 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
With running back, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on OLB-EDGE is the choice that costs them. However the rest shakes out, Jones at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.4
· Pick 4
· Ladd McConkey
· WR
· rank 29
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.27
· Pick 27
· Jackson Powers-Johnson
· C
· rank 30
In the 27th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.3
· Pick 35
· Nate Wiggins
· CB
· rank 26
Nate Wiggins slipping to pick No. 35 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.2
· Pick 66
· Spencer Rattler
· QB
· rank 112
A wild overpay on Spencer Rattler in Round 3, Pick 2, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.7
· Pick 71
· Javon Solomon
· OLB-EDGE
· rank 111
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with running back, tight end and other spots open.
R3.27
· Pick 90
· Cedric Gray
· LB
· rank 119
Cedric Gray at the 90th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 89
A quiet steal in the 104th pick: Dominick Puni for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.2
· Pick 138
· Javon Foster
· OT
· rank 132
Javon Foster in slot 138 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.26
· Pick 162
· Christian Jones
· OT
· rank 141
They barely believed it either: Christian Jones still on the board at pick 162. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.11
· Pick 186
· Layden Robinson
· OG
· rank 208
This one needs a full-page explanation: Layden Robinson in pick No. 186, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.6
· Pick 226
· Eric Watts
· DL-EDGE
· rank 239
Eric Watts in Round 7, Pick 6 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
