Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: B-.

by Vincent · 2024 NFL Draft · 11 picks · 2 steals · 4 reaches
Value C-
Need A-
Trades B-
Future B-

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Cardinals' quarterback, full stop.

The cost of the Worthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. On value alone, Hart makes the weekend a net positive. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 47
In pick No. 4 they get a true top target, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 27
In the 27th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 30
A tidy little value on Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 35, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 64
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in the 66th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Marshawn Kneeland · DE-EDGE · rank 75
No drama and no debate, Marshawn Kneeland went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 119
They talked themselves into Cedric Gray at Round 3, Pick 27, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 85
They barely believed it either: Patrick Paul still on the board at No. 104. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 115
The board fumbled Cam Hart all the way to pick 138, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.26 · Pick 162 · Nelson Ceaser · DL-EDGE · rank 182
Nelson Ceaser in the 162nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 199
Javion Cohen in Round 6, Pick 11 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Tylan Grable · OT · rank 224
Tylan Grable in the 226th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
