The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Kyle Kennard, the No. 77 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 32 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Travis Hunter at pick 13. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Walter Nolen all the way to the 44th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Wyatt Milum in Round 2, Pick 15 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Jalon Walker still on the board at the 78th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; T.J. Sanders at pick No. 81 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
TreVeyon Henderson in slot 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tre Harris in No. 115 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dylan Fairchild at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Alfred Collins at slot 141 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nicholas Singleton at pick No. 148 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach No. 168 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 170; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 171st pick is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Jake Majors at the 189th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Darien Porter in Round 6, Pick 34 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Kyle Kennard here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
