The Giants lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Getting Carson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
They reached a country mile for J.J. McCarthy at the 14th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Adonai Mitchell in pick 39 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nice patience on Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who had no business lasting to the 70th pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They will replay Caelen Carson at No. 108 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Dylan Laube in slot 140; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 11, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A conviction pick on Brennan Jackson at pick No. 169 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
