Somebody in the 168th pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Malik Mustapha, the No. 142 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
It is not that Knight is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Kamren Kinchens at pick No. 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Fair-plus on Chop Robinson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for Christian Haynes in the 71st overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bucky Irving in the 88th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had Mike Sainristil higher than No. 91, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Tyrice Knight while clear needs at quarterback, wide receiver and other spots sat open.
You do not let a safety like Malik Mustapha reach slot 168 and blink. They did not. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
