New England Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Skattebo: B+.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Cam Skattebo tumbling to the Patriots in No. 217 is a gift they did not have to think twice about.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

The DK Metcalf pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Josh Simmons · OT · rank 20
In No. 18 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 22
Jalon Walker is a better player than the 38th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 43
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Warren at pick No. 69 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 69
Deone Walker at slot 77 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Savion Williams · WR · rank 108
Savion Williams at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 81
Taking Barrett Carter in pick 143 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 110
Cam Skattebo in Round 7, Pick 1 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 204
Jared Wilson at the 220th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Clay Webb · OG · rank 212
The board fumbled Clay Webb all the way to pick No. 238, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
