The Cowboys did not so much draft Gerry Bohanon as overpay for him, 189 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The Sanders pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get juice off the edge. More want than need.
They paid sticker price for Emeka Egbuka in slot 29, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Derrick Harmon is a better player than pick 44 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Dylan Fairchild, who had no business lasting to the 73rd pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Hollin Pierce in Round 3, Pick 31; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at No. 110 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nicholas Singleton in No. 148 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Oronde Gadsden II at the 168th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Raheim Sanders at pick No. 209 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Gerry Bohanon in slot 248 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
