The board owed the Browns one, and it paid up: Josiah Trotter, the No. 56 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 9 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a weapon on the perimeter, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Max Iheanachor in the 39th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Kenyon Sadiq still on the board at the 40th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Connor Lew come to them and pounced at pick 70. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Chase Bisontis at pick No. 108 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Circle this one: Josiah Trotter at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Taking Zakee Wheatley in slot 146 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Chris McClellan in pick 148 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Will Lee III at pick No. 149 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Domani Jackson in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Taylen Green here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 246th pick, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Trey Zuhn III, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
De'Zhaun Stribling at Round 7, Pick 40 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
