When the story of this class is written, it opens with George Gumbs Jr. at pick 151, a reach of 40 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The Moore pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and running back.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Chris Brazzell II at the Round 1 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had Dillon Thieneman higher than slot 43, and the safety fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Eli Stowers at the 75th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Elijah Sarratt in No. 90 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They did well to land Sam Hecht in pick No. 91, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A want over a need in the 94th overall pick: Devin Moore adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman and running back keeps waiting.
J.C. Davis in pick No. 130 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for George Gumbs Jr. at Round 5, Pick 11, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Keyshaun Elliott for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Luke Altmyer in the 238th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
